WIth my whole house system and two DVRs, if I attempt to sign up for a third recording at a time when I have two already set, I will be advised of the problem and a suggestion made to record it on the other DVR. It won't happen automatically. Similarly, if I attempt to watch a third channel, while recording two at some particular time, I am asked which one to stop recording.
