Is it possible to connect devices such as DVD Players the DVR units? I would like to pass the DVD signal through the DVR and to the TV to minimize the number of cords passing to the TV. Is this feasible? If not, what is the purpose of the Video/Audio/S-Video Input jacks on the DVR?

The short answer is no. None of the 'input' connections on the 6416 or 72xx boxes actually "work" (I think you can power from the USB connection, but that's all).. The closest thing to an input device is the E-SATA port on the 72xx boxes that can have an external hdd as of IMG 1.9 to get around the 160gb storage limit on the 6416 and 7216 boxes.
You can NOT pass the DVD or any other signal through the DVR box to another device. A veritable forest of cables is a fact of life!
If you want to record off the box, all of the outputs are active simulataneously, so HDMI, Component, S-VHS etc are all active simultaenously. For example my TV uses the component video and my VCR uses S-VHS. I needed Y cables to get the audio to both places however.
As to why such connection are there, that's a marketing question for Motorola. Motorola simply provides the box, the functionality is determined by the firmware, which Verizon creates.
