There are USB tuner devices out there that will tune QAM channels, and record. But they will only receive the un encrypted QAM channels, local channels that are required by the FCC to be sent un encrypted in the clear. There are no USB devices that will accept a cable card to get the encrypted subscription channels. ATI did have a USB tuner box for cable ready PCs. They did not go over very well because the PC had to be certified as a cable ready PC that supported HDCP and the cable card. There were many problems with these.
Now with Windows 7 microsoft has removed the requirements for a certified PC and there is a new card coming out the end of March. 4 tuners and cable card ready. Users can install the card and get Verizon to install the cable card. I am not sure if it will be as easy to setup as a Tivo with a cable card, but it will be interesting.
