recording to a vcr

I have a toshiba sd 392 combo vcr/dvd player on the tv WITHOUT the multi-room dvr and I can't record any progams to the vcr.

Should I be able to record one show while watching another? I have the vcr/dvd player set to channel 3 and i can program my selection and the vcr shows that it's recording but when I playback there is no picture. HELP PLEASE

The short answer is no.

You can insert the VCR between the STB (assuming you're using a coax RF connection) and the TV and set it the same channel as whatever channel you have to set the TV to in order to view the STB (channel 3 or 4 depending on the STB setting), but the VCR will then only see the channel you are presently watching on the TV.   You tell the VCR to always record channel 3/4 (not the actual channel) and you can't watch one show and record another.

FiOS does not transmit analog channels like some cable companies still do (an increasing number of them are going all digital as well so many on traditional cable are encountering the same circumstances as FiOS).

Time to upgrade your technology to the DVR service from Verizon or a Tivo with multi-tuner cablecard capability (which would replace your STB from Verizon).

There are some DVD/VCR combos that have QAM tuners but you would still be limited to only recording local channels.

Thankyou for the info. I do have the multi-room dvr but some times it's never enough you know. Would a seperate dvr recorder

work without intrferring with verizons dvr? Thanks again.

No, you would still have the same issue. The only device that can record one thing and watch another is a DVR.

All DVD-recorders and VCR's will only be able to record the program that you are watching.

Now if you want seperate recorders, your choices are...

Another DVR from Verizon

Or a 3rd party DVR (like TIVO or Moxie) plus a cable card from Verizon

Or a cable card from Verizon plus a Computer capture device such as the Ceton (to convert a computer to a DVR)

Those are about your only options.

Otherwise any DVD or VCR you get will have to be connected between the STB and TV and then you can record the program you are watching.
