security & privacy: there's an attack on your wi-fi network.

I recently received the following alert, I assume from the Verizon Security & Privacy app:

There's an attack on your wi-fi network

20:c0:47:19:3e:13

This attack could allow someone to listen to your web traffic.  Do you want to disconnect ?

- Yes, disconnect

- No, remain connected

I've searched on-line but have not found any information on this message.

System info:

Samsung S7 on Verizon Wireless.  Wi-fi network is Verizon Fios.

Google Play shows all apps up to date except Samsung Connect.

It is the security & privacy app on your phone altering you of an attack on your WIFI network since the phone is accessing that router. The best way to prevent outside attacks to your home network would be to change your WIFI password to a new one, ensure your router firmware is up to date, as well as antivirus/firewall on the computer directly connected to the router.

Is there a way that I can see what kind of attack has been identified ?

WE greatly value your security and privacy! I apologize as the Support and Protection app is unable to identify what exactly was happening with the router that prompted the alert. I would suggest consulting your routers admin web site and troubleshooting option from the manufacturer.

I have been getting the same message several times throughout the day, including at home, at work and on other secured WiFi networks I have access to so this is not about just one router.  Is this a phone issue and not a router issue?

DRL124,

You definitely have valid concerns. When receiving an alert about your connection, it's always best to try to figure out if the device or from the network you're connected to. The message regarding an attack on your network is a general alert to let you know when the connection may have become unsafe. This isn't a device issue, but it surely can happen when connected to different Wi-Fi networks. You have the option to turn the alert off by going to Settings while in the Security & Privacy app and turning the "Alert me when connected to an unsafe Wi-Fi network" button off.

The network is my home wi-fi, Verizon Fios.  I did poke around in the admin screens on the router but did not see any alerts.  Is there something particular that I can look for ?

I appreciate you taking time to reach out here. We are able to address Verizon Wireless cellular concerns via this page. It would be best to reach out to our FIOS firends via their Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/fios.

Also, if you select "Disconnect" you are not allowed to reconnect to that WiFi, no matter what, unless you go to the verizon security & privacy app and turn OFF Wi-Fi Security.   The app assumes that if that Wi-Fi was ever under attack it will ALWAYS be under attack.  In fact, if you are connected to a Wi-Fi under attack and later, under your home Wi Fi, you see the warning and select Disconnect, you will be disconnected from your home Wi-Fi forever.

It appears that you can turn off Wi-Fi protection by going to the App and selecting the small "Settings" icon and finding the app page that has 3 sliders on it for web security, wi-fi, etc.and turning the wi-fi off.  Then connect to your home wi-fi and then go back to the app and turn wi-fi security back on.   That SEEMS to solve the problem.

Clarification:  Go to the verizon security & privacy app and open it and wait for it to come up with the three security types - Security Scan, Privacy, Web Security.   Tap on Web-Security and look for the small Settings icon at the bottom and tap that.  Then you will see the three sliders.

Were you getting this warning too? I am just wondering if that last update we got took care of this problem.

I wonder if ALINGELB and DRL124 are still having this problem and if that last update helped them.

I'm having the same problem. I even factory reset my phone and the app is still saying this. So far it is only happening on one wi-fi network. The wi-fi is protected and firewall is tightened down. Even changed the wi-fi password. I never had this problem with this wi-fi network until recently. There must be a problem with the app with a recent update. I think Verizon needs to look into this and fix their app.

I just received the message that my Wi-Fi was under attack, from my Directtv box. First time for any message like this. I think maybe this app is messed up.

I'm hoping the made the same change that I made yesterday.  I updated my security app on my Verzion phone to the new one, and now I'm receiving this message.  I'm assuming it's a generic one, but I don't want to go freaking out my system's Admin about a web attack, if this is just because a lot of users connect to an access point.  Is there an FAQ from this new Security & Privacy app?

Otakuist,

I am truly sorry for any concern the alert about your Wi-Fi being attacked has casued. I too would be alarmed if I received such an alert. We do not want you to fear though. If the alert began right after updating the app your wifi will still be protected. I am going to send feedback to the app developer and if you could also do the same that would be great. You can send feedback by going to the Google play store or iTunes store, serach for the app, and scroll to the bottom of the app details page and email the email address listed. We want to make sure we address these alerts in full.

I have been receiving the same alert as well for the past several weeks.  It only occurs at work.  I know the network is password protected.  It's a bit frustrating to continue to get the alert.  I, too, am very interested to learn if this is an app-issue or if we are all having attacks on our wi-fi networks.

I get this error with every WiFi I connect to. So far that has been 7 different networks, and of those 3 were public. Okay, I guess I could understand that. The other 4 were private and 2 of those were behind sophisticated firewalls of which I am the Administrator; I know those 2 networks were not under attack. If this software is actually made by McAfee as it claims, I'd switch providers, because McAfee makes terrible software.

It seems like a lot of apps that have the name Verizon on them are not working the way they are supposed to. Not sure if it is a cliche with other Verizon software or if it is with Samsung or other phone makers. Just wished that they would figure this out or give us back the original apps.
